Originally called the Mitsubishi Forte in Japan when it launched, and the Mitsubishi Colt here in South Africa, the Used Mitsubishi Triton for sale at home have proven to be hard bakkies to beat when it comes to ruggedness, safety, comfort and their ability to take on almost any job. Sold and built continuously since the late 1970s, the Triton played a big part in making the pickup vehicle one of the most beloved vehicle types in the world.

Pre-owned Mitsubishi Triton Available in SA:

From the moment the Triton first hit global sales floors, it was an instant success outside of Japan, with later generations including double cab model variants. The sheer versatility and reliability of the Triton ensured it was also a hit in the pre-owned market, with used Mitsubishi Triton becoming big sellers with families who were looking for something more than your average suburban car offered, as well as fleet managers wanting an excellent LCV.

6th Generation Mitsubishi Triton
2023 – Present

Revealed in Thailand in July 2023, the sixth-generation Triton was launched in South Africa on 19 November 2024 with five trim levels: GL, GLS, Xtreme, Athlete and Edition 46. Featuring Mitsubishi’s “Beast Mode” design concept, the new-gen Triton has significantly improved over its predecessor across several key areas.

It is larger, more powerful, more technologically advanced, safer, stronger, more ergonomic, better specified and more comfortable. From a practical perspective, the updated Triton features a larger load bin, increased towing capacity and enhanced off-road capability.

Among the five trims, three special editions have been tailored for South African drivers. The Triton Athlete is designed for urban professionals, blending sleek styling with performance-focused features. The Triton Edition caters to off-road enthusiasts, boasting rugged features for overlanding and adventurous terrains. Lastly, the Triton Xtreme Edition offers a bold design and versatile performance, ideal for those balancing city life with outdoor exploration.

Did You Know? Since its global debut in 2023, the sixth-generation Mitsubishi Triton has earned numerous prestigious accolades. These include a special award at the 2025 RJC Car of the Year, hosted by the Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists’ Conference of Japan (RJC), the iF Design Award 2024 for product design, and the 2023 Good Design Award from the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, among many others.

5th Generation Mitsubishi Triton
2015 – 2022

The current, and without a doubt, the most advanced Mitsubishi Triton to ever be sold in South Africa, was launched in 2015. It has made big inroads into the SUV-style pickup market thanks to its good looks and ample cabin interior.

In 2022, they added a single cab bakkie to the list of already-impressive bakkies, topping it off with the Triton Xtreme 4×4 and Triton Heritage special edition models, each getting 7 Airbags, Keyless Operating System, Super Select II 4WD System*, Electronic Off-road Assistance* and Hill Descent Control* to name a few.

Both the Mitsubishi Triton Xtreme and the Triton Heritage variants look incredible with a modern and stylish feel but without sacrificing durability and ruggedness. All come standard with many driver comfort and safety features, including airbags, ABS, EBD, central locking, immobiliser and speed-sensing door locks among others.

The single cab boasts a refined interior, beyond that of a traditional workhorse, with a spacious load box measuring 1520mm in length, 1470mm in width and 475mm in depth. Like the GL double cab variant, the SC Triton is also powered by the impressive 2.4-litre intercooled turbodiesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The popularity of the Triton range has been further bolstered by its impressive range of standard safety features, which include:

  • ASTC (Active Stability & Traction Control)
  • ABS (Anti-lock Brake System)
  • EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution)

4th Generation Mitsubishi Triton
2005 – 2014

Released in 2005 and sold in over 140 markets globally, this Mitsubishi Pickup was one of the most popular bakkies ever built by the Japanese brand. Due to its larger size, it was a big hit here in South Africa but sold poorly in Japan due to the fact that workhorse vehicles in that country tend to be much more compact in size due to the limited space within urban areas. Because of this, it was sadly the last Mitsubishi Triton Generation to be sold in Japan.

Did You Know? Although manufactured in Thailand and Brazil, this fourth-generation Triton was shipped in parts to South Africa for assembly at the Daimler AG Vehicle Plant in East London.

1986 – 1996

Launched globally in 1986 and in South Africa in 1987 as the Mitsubishi Colt, this was the first generation of Triton Bakkie to be sold in South Africa and was available in local Mitsubishi dealerships throughout its entire generation production run.

The durability of these pickups has proven to be legendary, with more than a few of these legendary bakkies still to be found on South African roads today. Theses Triton LCVs made the perfect flatbed delivery vehicle and were a popular choice for furniture and appliance delivery vehicle companies throughout the late 1980s and even late into the 1990s.

Did You Know? The second generation Triton, or Colt as it was known here in South Africa, was intended to be a low-cost pickup for use in developing markets. However, due to its massive popularity and rugged reliability, this version of the Triton was also launched in a number of other countries under the Dodge Ram 50 name.

1978 – 1986

Also known as the Mitsubishi L200 and the Mitsubishi Mighty Max, the very first generation of Mitsubishi Triton was not sold in South Africa. However, it was available in a number of other African countries and a few model variants did find their way into the country. Although extremely rugged, this first-generation Triton Pickup is exceptionally rare to find.

Did You Know? Chrysler released their version of the first generation Mitsubishi Triton, which was manufactured under license, called the Dodge Ram 50 at the same time as the first generation Triton. It was their answer to the growing small pickup and early LCV market which included competitor vehicles such as the Ford Courier and the Chevrolet LUV.
